Madīnat al-Zahrā' is an archaeological site located near the city of Córdoba (Spain), barely 7 km away, founded in 940 CE by Caliph 'Abd al-Rahmān III, a few years after the proclamation of the caliphate. This place is extremely important due to its status as a palatine city until 1010 CE, the year that marks its end and destruction as a result of the fitna, the civil war that took place in al-Andalus. This research focuses on the study of pottery in the space known as »Patio de los Pilares«, a place that presents different questions about its function and phases. This material was found in an enclosed area within a reliable stratigraphy, so one of the main objectives is to present a chronology that is as clearly defined as possible in order to serve as a reference in the future. A large part of the material corresponds to a waste context, which is interesting as it allows us to get closer to more daily aspects of the archaeological site, especially service tasks.Madīnat al-Zahrā' is an archaeological site located near the city of Córdoba (Spain), barely 7 km away, founded in 940 CE by Caliph 'Abd al-Rahmān III, a few years after the proclamation of the caliphate. Producción CientíficaThe coronavirus crisis has highlighted the consumption of social media and online video platforms in search of an alternative discourse to that provided by traditional media. The objective of this article is to find an approach to education and scientific dissemination on COVID-19 present in the Spanish context of YouTube, focusing on the content analysis of audiovisual texts generated by creators from the medical and biomedical fields. A methodological orientation was used for this based on the Grounded Theory, which was applied to five case studies whose informative material on SARS-CoV-2 exceeded ten million views as of March 2021. The results reveal the existence of a group of medical professionals in the Spanish YouTube sphere who, since the COVID-19 outbreak, have been involved in the construction of an alternative discourse around the health crisis and its evolution that pursues a high standard of audiovisual quality, scientific rigor, and educational ability.Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación y Ministerio de Universidades - FEDER (CAS19/00226 and PID2019-104689RB-I00)

Antifungal effect and reduction of Ulmus minor symptoms to Ophiostoma novo-ulmi by carvacrol and salicylic acid

There are still no effective means to control Dutch elm disease (DED), caused by the vascular fungi Ophiostoma ulmi and O. novo-ulmi. Plant phenolics may provide a new strategy for DED control, given their known antifungal activity against pathogens and their involvement in plant defence mechanisms. The in vitro antifungal activity of salicylic acid, carvacrol, thymol, phenol, o-cresol, m-cresol, p-cresol, and 2,5-xylenol against the DED pathogens was tested. Also, the protective effect of watering Ulmus minor seedlings with these compounds was tested against O. novo-ulmi. Salicylic acid, carvacrol, and thymol showed the strongest antifungal in vitro activity, while carvacrol and salicylic acid provided the strongest in vivo protection against O. novo-ulmi (63 and 46% reduction of leaf wilting symptoms with respect to controls, respectively). The effect of the treatments on tree phenology was low, and a significant negative relation was observed between the number of days to bud burst and the leaf wilting symptoms after inoculation, probably determined by genetic differences among the elm tree progenies used. The treatments with salicylic acid, carvacrol and thymol induced the highest shift in phenolic metabolite profile with respect to control trees. The protective effect of carvacrol and salicylic acid is discussed in terms of their combined activity as antifungal compounds and as inductors of tree defence responses

The present work tries to make easier the educational work using the current technologies. Nowadays, most students carry a smartphone. These devices have a huge potential, allowing to perform thousands of tasks through the large amount of applications that exist for them. Within the classroom, they make multiples activities possible, improving communication with the professor so that he/she can receive feedback. One of the most common activities carried out in the classroom, which allows the professor receiving information about how the students are following the class, is to answer questionnaires. With them, the professor can analyze if the students have correctly acquired the knowledge explained. Another use of this tool is to assess students. In both cases, the usefulness of the questionnaires is beyond question. The Universidad Carlos III de Madrid currently has a Learning Management System based on Moodle which is called Aula Global. This system allows the professors to create questionnaires to be answered by the students. However, the use inside the classroom of the LMS is limited to accessing it from a computer. There are numerous applications for mobile devices that permit to perform diverse tasks of this system, but none allows answering questionnaires. Here lies the main objective of this project: the implementation of an application to one of the most extended operative systems for mobile devices to answer Moodle questionnaires. Thanks to this application, the students may answer the questions, created in Moodle by the professors, from their devices. Because the university has already a system with applications to answer multiple-choice questions, it was decided to expand this system to get the questionnaires from Moodle, so the students can answer the questions contained in them from student´s applications of this system. It is named mSuite and has been developed by the research group miSEL which belongs to the Software Engineering Lab. It is composed of applications set for iOS and Android operating systems that help the professors planning and delivering their classes, asking questions to students and integrating with social networks to send information during the class. In this extension, an Android application for the students has been developed, a plug-in has been created to recover questionnaires created by the professors in Moodle and some changes on the architecture have been performed.Ingeniería Informátic

Pre-Calculated Duty Cycle Control Implemented in FPGA for Power Factor Correction

A power factor correction (PFC) technique based on pre-calculated duty cycle values is presented in this paper. In this method the duty ratios for half a line period are calculated in advance and stored in a memory. By synchronizing the memory with the line, near unity power factors can be achieved in a specific operating point. The main advantage of this technique is that neither current measurement nor current loop are needed. To obtain stable output voltages a voltage loop is included. A boost converter prototype controlled by an FPGA evaluation board has been implemented in order to verify the functionality of the proposed method. Both the simulation and experimental results show that near unity power factor can be achieved with this PFC strategy
